Worth a stop

The Wildorado Wind Ranch, a 161-megawatt wind farm completed in 2007 and repowered in 2020, spreads across roughly 16,000 acres around town. Its turbines are the dominant sight for miles.

A little history

Wildorado got its start in 1900 as a rail shipping point on the old Tascosa-to-Canyon City cattle trail. Settler John R. Goodman became postmaster, then founded the Wildorado State Bank and built the town's hotel after the railroad arrived in 1908.

Wind country

Wildorado has a 161-megawatt wind farm spread across the ranchland around it, which is a good illustration of how this country works. Big infrastructure gets built out here when the economics line up. Internet has usually been the exception, because a cable company counts houses per mile and this is not a place with many.

Licensed fixed wireless does not count houses per mile. A tower sends a radio signal to a small antenna on your roof, and whether the next place is one mile off or nine changes nothing about whether it works.
