A little history

Skellytown got its name from the Skelly Oil Company, which developed the Carson County oilfields in the 1920s and named the townsite after founder William Grove Skelly. Within four months of the 1927 railroad depot going in, the town had two refineries, a carbon black plant, and over 100 oil wells around it.

Skellytown

Skelly Oil bought the ground and laid out this town in 1926, and the restored filling station on Main Street still marks what built it. Oil towns up here were put up quickly and a lot of them held on, which is more than can be said for the infrastructure that was supposed to follow.
