Shiprock Pinnacle rises nearly 1,600 feet above the desert southwest of town, a volcanic monolith and a sacred site to the Navajo Nation. Climbing has been prohibited since 1970, so enjoy the view from the road.

A little history

Shiprock was founded in 1903 when Indian Affairs superintendent William Taylor Shelton established the San Juan Agency and Shiprock Indian Boarding School there. The town's Navajo name, Naat'aanii Neez, means tall leader and refers to Shelton himself.

Mark the calendar

The Northern Navajo Nation Fair, held every October at the Shiprock Fairgrounds, is the oldest and most traditional of the Navajo fairs, with a parade, rodeo, powwow, arts and crafts, and traditional song and dance.

Shiprock

Shiprock was founded in 1903 as an agency and school for the northern Navajo, and it has grown into one of the largest communities on the Navajo Nation. Shiprock Pinnacle stands nearly 1,600 feet over the desert southwest of town and is visible from a long way off in every direction.

Broadband access across the Navajo Nation has lagged the rest of the country by a wide margin, and that is a matter of record rather than opinion. The reasons are the ones you would expect: enormous distances, difficult terrain, and very few households per mile of line. Trenching cable across that has never penciled out for anybody.

Licensed fixed wireless does not need the line. A signal travels from a tower to a small antenna on the roof, and terrain and distance are engineering questions rather than dealbreakers. That is what makes service possible in places the wired carriers wrote off.
