Sanford got its start in 1927 during Hutchinson County's oil boom, on ranch land that belonged to pioneer rancher J. M. Sanford, whose name the town still carries.

Sanford and the lake

Sanford Dam holds back the Canadian River to make Lake Meredith, which is why this small town has a lot more traffic than its population suggests. Summer weekends fill up and the demand on any connection here climbs with them.
