The Rusk Footbridge, a 546-foot wooden footbridge near the courthouse square, is believed to be the longest footbridge in the country. It was first built in 1861 so folks could cross the creek during floods and was rebuilt in 1889.
A little history
Rusk was established in 1846 when the Texas legislature created Cherokee County, naming the new county seat for Gen. Thomas Jefferson Rusk, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
