The J. A. Baker Store downtown honors the merchant credited as Lockney's founder and carries an official state historical marker.

A little history

Lockney got its start in 1889 when settlers from nearby Della Plain moved here looking for better water. In 1894, J. A. Baker donated land for a new townsite a mile west, and the town grew from there.

Lockney

Settlers moved here from Della Plain in 1889 looking for better water, which is about as Panhandle a reason to found a town as there is. Floyd County farmland has surrounded it ever since.

The internet situation follows the same logic as the water did. What is available depends on what somebody was willing to build out to. Cable companies counted houses per mile and passed. Licensed fixed wireless does not need that count. A radio path runs from a tower to a small antenna on your roof and covers the farms and homes along the county roads.
