The National Route 66 Museum, part of Elk City's Old Town Museum Complex, tells the story of the people who lived, worked, and traveled the Mother Road. Inside you can walk through all eight Route 66 states, with murals and vignettes recreating the eras of the road.

A little history

Elk City was surveyed and platted in March 1901 along Elk Creek, and its post office originally carried the name Busch. The name switched to Elk City in 1907, and a Shell Oil well that came in on Thanksgiving week of 1947 kicked off the oil boom that grew the town.

1901. Land promoters out of Weatherford started it when the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad pushed west through here. First lots sold March 20, 1901.

Elk City

Land promoters out of Weatherford started Elk City in 1901 when the railroad pushed west, and Route 66 came through later and made it a stop. The Route 66 Museum downtown keeps that part alive.

Beckham County has the same shape of problem as the Texas side of our footprint. Town has options, the country around it has fewer, and the gap between them is wide. Licensed fixed wireless closes it with a radio path from a tower to a small antenna on your roof.
