About Channing

Around Channing.

Worth a stop

The XIT Ranch General Office building, built in 1898-1899 from red brick hauled in on five railroad cars. It served as headquarters of the XIT Ranch, once the largest fenced ranch in the world, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A little history

Channing was founded in 1888 along the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway. It was first named Rivers, then renamed Channing that same year, and it became the Hartley County seat after elections in 1896 and 1903, with the original courthouse hauled into town on wheels by XIT cowboys.

Channing, and what the XIT left behind

The XIT General Office still stands here, built in 1898 out of red brick that came in on five railcars. Channing was the headquarters of a three million acre ranch. Today it is a small town in a very large county, and that ratio is the whole internet problem in one sentence.

Hartley County has a lot of ground and not many meters on it. Cable math never worked here and never will. Licensed fixed wireless does work, because a radio link from a tower to a small antenna on your roof does not care how far it is to the next place.

If you run cattle or a farm office, ask about upload. Cameras, remote monitoring, filing, and video calls all depend on it, and it is what rural connections have always been shortest on.

Local techs handle installs and repairs.
