Worth a stop

Cactus Aquatic Park, the city's municipal water park with slides, a spray playground, a climbing wall, and diving boards. It was built with a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant matched by a donation from JBS USA, and uses water-recollection technology suited to the dry Panhandle.

A little history

Cactus started as a World War II company town, built in 1942 around the Cactus Ordnance Works, which produced ammonium nitrate for explosives. It was named for the cactus and other prickly plants cleared to build the plant and worker housing.

A town built for a job

Cactus was built from nothing in 1942 to make ammunition for the war, which makes it one of the few towns up here that exists for a reason other than a railroad. It kept working. The plants around it still run, and the people who work them still need service at the house.
